IDENTITY
Exploring multi-cultural identities and identity with family, work, peers, and other relationships
Everyone experiences identity in different ways. Our cultural/racial background, beliefs and behaviors from our family, personality traits, and relationships with peers and/or significant others all influence how we perceive and carry ourselves in the world around us.
For instance, we might feel that we are caught in between two places. We may have been taught to side with our family and work as a collective unit, but at the same time, we want to differentiate ourselves and have our individual lifestyle. This conflict may cause guilt and/or shame and cause us to feel even more stuck.
It is hard to hear our inner critics fighting with the part of us that has desires. We may even shut down to avoid dealing with the negative feelings that come up.
When working with identities, whether it is being an adult child of immigrants and/or of different ethnic/racial/cultural backgrounds, we’ll work together to look at where you stand and how you are influenced by others. This all affects your narrative: where you are in life today, your quality of life, and where you want to go.
